May 5, 2005 Global Ecology Research Center Receives 2005 Excellence in Energy and Sustainability Award from AIA San Francisco Oakland, Calif.— Rumsey Engineers today announced that the American Institute of Architects (AIA) San Francisco chapter has selected the Global Ecology Research Center for its 2005 Excellence in Sustainability Award. Rumsey was the lead consultant for the mechanical and plumbing engineering for the project, which was completed last year. This is the third award garnered by this innovative laboratory building. Located at Stanford University, this center is an extremely low-energy laboratory and office building for the Carnegie Institution, based in Washington, D.C. The Global Ecology Research Center building drastically reduces carbon impacts while providing laboratory and research spaces that meet the highest standards of comfort and performance. The design team was able to reduce carbon emissions associated with the building operation and materials by over 60% over traditional measures, while aggressively pursuing habitat and water conservation goals. 'The Global Ecology Research Center achieves what some people thought was unattainable: a high level of energy performance without compromising important non-energy sustainable design issues,' said Peter Rumsey, president of Rumsey Engineers. 'It's extremely gratifying to be recognized by the AIA for the extraordinary work done by the design team to make the client's vision a reality.' The AIA's Excellence in Sustainability Award honors built work that lowers the impacts of building operations on energy demand and global climate change. While the primary focus of this award is energy performance, the winning project must take an integrated approach, creating a healthy, aesthetically pleasing environment for users, and fostering resource efficiency in non-energy related areas.
