Date: Dec. 15, 2003 Global Ecology Center Featuring Rumsey Engineers' Innovative Heating and Cooling System Nears Completion Oakland, Calif.—Rumsey Engineers today announced that the Carnegie Institution of Washington's Global Ecology Center, one world's most energy-efficient laboratories, is near completion. Rumsey Engineers designed and modeled a very low-energy heating and cooling system for the building, which will be occupied in early 2004. Located on the Stanford University campus, the Global Ecology Center is 60 percent more efficient than a standard laboratory. The Global Ecology Center is a highly energy-efficient, signature building for the work of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. The building was designed by EHDD Architecture in San Francisco, Calif. and houses a laboratory and investigation area on the first floor, including specimen storage, fume hoods, analysis equipment and other technical equipment. The second floor is used for office space and conference rooms. Rumsey Engineers provided heating/cooling system designs and modeling, and was instrumental in the efficiency and passive conditioning implementation throughout the building. The Global Ecology Center features a very low energy cooling system that achieved efficiency without sacrificing simplicity or the needs of the occupants.
