Rumsey Engineers Selected for Environmental Research and Education Facility at Lake Tahoe

Oakland, Calif.— Rumsey Engineers today announced it was selected for the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, a world-class center for environmental research and education to be located in Incline Village, Nevada. Rumsey was hired as the lead consultant for the mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering.

Under development for a decade, the $24 million project is a collaborative partnership between the Sierra Nevada College, the University of California, Davis, the Desert Research Institute, and the RAND Corp. The 40,000 sq. ft. center will feature offices, laboratories, exhibits, classrooms and conference space. The venture is funded by a combination of public and private institutions, as well as federal, state, private and foundation funding.

According to Peter Rumsey, the building will exemplify sustainable design principles and consume about half of the energy of a standard building design. Targeted for a LEED Gold rating, the building's "green" features will include radiant heating and cooling, solar photovoltaics, gray water recycling and natural ventilation. "This building will produce all of its energy on site and set an example of environmental sustainability for the entire Tahoe region," said Rumsey.

Research at the center will focus on atmospheric, terrestrial and aquatic systems and their complex interactions, with the goal of addressing the balance between societal demands and scenic beauty in the Lake Tahoe Basin and other threatened areas. "The center will play an important role conducting research to keep the lake and surrounding areas healthy," added Mr. Rumsey.

Groundbreaking for the center is scheduled for Summer 2005.
