Rumsey Engineers Demonstrates Commitment to Energy and Water Efficiency Through EPA/DOE Labs21 Program
Oakland, Calif.—Rumsey Engineers today announced that it has joined the ranks of corporate, academic, and government pioneers leading the way to sustainable laboratory design by becoming a Laboratories for the 21st Century (Labs21) Supporter. As a member of Labs21, Rumsey Engineers has demonstrated its commitment to improving energy and water efficiency, encouraging the use of renewable energy sources, and promoting environmental stewardship in our nation's laboratories.
"We applaud Rumsey Engineers for its leadership as a Labs21 Supporter," said Rich Lemley, Director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Office of Administrative Services, whose agency co-sponsors the voluntary program with the U.S. Department of Energy. "Their public support for Labs21 and the broader goal of sustainable laboratory design helps bring new vigor to our shared vision of environmental excellence."
The mechanical design of laboratories requires specialized knowledge to deliver cleanliness, health and energy efficiency requirements. Rumsey Engineers has built laboratory facilities to meet the most exacting standards demanded of the world's top researchers. One of the firm's recent laboratory designs for the Carnegie Institution's innovative Center for Global Ecology at Stanford University has set a new standard for green laboratories, making it arguably the lowest energy use laboratory facility of its kind in the U.S
Because of stringent ventilation requirements and other health and safety concerns, the average laboratory uses at least five times as much energy as a typical office building. "At Rumsey Engineers, we understand the bottom line benefits of designing with energy efficiency in mind," said president Peter Rumsey. "By supporting Labs21, we're contributing to industry best practices, and tapping into a whole network of organizations with similar environmental goals."
