February 23, 2006 Bay School of San Francisco Receives 2006 IIDA Honor Award Oakland, CA - Rumsey Engineers today announced that the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) has awarded the 2006 Honor Award in the institutional category to The Bay School of San Francisco. The design team for the project consisted of Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects; Rumsey Engineers, mechanical design; Integrated Design Associates, electrical design; Murphy Burr Curry, structural engineer; Architectural Lighting Design, lighting; Charles M. Salter Associates, acoustic consultant; the Office of Cheryl Barton, landscape design, and URS Corp., civil engineer.
This new independent high school in San Francisco's Presidio emphasizes science, technology, and ethics in its academic programs. The adaptive reuse of an historic Presidio landmark building to house the school serves as an example of sensitive and thoughtful sustainable design. It provides an optimal learning environment that is beautifully lit by both natural and artificial light and has a very high standard of indoor air quality and comfort for students and faculty. Important energy and water efficient design features integrated into the building include natural ventilation, daylighting, energy-efficient hydronic radiators, highly efficient lighting with occupancy sensing controls, waterless urinals, and a drip-irrigation system. The building is estimated to use 25% less energy and 45% less water over its lifetime than typical school buildings of comparable size.
Jurors on the awards committee praised the design effort as being highly appropriate for its intended user group, for encouraging activity and movement, and for exhibiting both playfulness and well executed details. Bay School representatives stated that "the design team worked closely with us, and responded with an inspired architectural design that communicates the school's vision." The IIDA Honor Awards, now in their second year, showcase the best of Northern California's exceptional design talent, and emphasize remarkable examples of collaborative efforts between design teams, clients, and construction teams.
