Rumsey Building Awarded LEED Platinum

Oakland, CA - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rumsey Engineers today announced that the Lewis and Clark State Office Building in Jefferson City, Missouri has received a LEED Platinum rating by the USGBC. The building is the first state government office building in the nation to earn this recognition, and only one of 16 facilities in the world that have earned the highest tier of recognition possible for energy and environmental design excellence under LEED New Construction (LEED-NC). Designed by BNIM Architects in Kansas City, Missouri, and Rumsey Engineers, the building serves as the headquarters for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. It was dedicated in 2004, began operation in 2005, and was designed to incorporate a number of notable sustainable or green design features.

The mission of the design team was to create an office space that met strict comfort and environmental sustainability guidelines and used 50% less energy than a typical office building. An exceptional collaboration between Rumsey Engineers and BNIM resulted in many innovative mechanical system features that significantly reduced the building's cooling and heating load. The building also uses natural ventilation and supply air from a raised floor system to further increase comfort and reduce energy use. The combined effects of an exceptional building envelope, extremely efficient central utility plant and a low resistance air-side system brought the HVAC system energy savings to 53% over ASHRAE 90.1. The building also limits water consumption by collecting rainwater for use in toilets, using drought-tolerant native plant species in landscaping, and preventing pollution-causing storm water runoff through a series of bio swales and detention ponds.

The 120,000 square foot facility shows that sustainable, energy efficient design does not have to add cost to the project. In fact, this project was completed with absolutely no premium over the budget for a typical state office building. “This building proves that both energy and money can be saved using off-the-shelf technology.” said Missouri Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder. “We envision the Lewis and Clark State Office Building as a blueprint for future projects that will promote our vision of a Missouri where people live and work in harmony with our natural and cultural resources,” said Kinder. “This building will also have a positive effect on the state revenues due to future cost savings achieved through dramatically increased energy efficiency.”

Laura Lesniewski, BNIM's project manager for the project, said “The BNIM team couldn't be more excited and proud of this achievement. We know that this could not have happened without a substantial team effort by the entire design team.”

According to Peter Rumsey, president of Rumsey Engineers, “It's a great honor for us to have this highly energy efficient design receive a Platinum rating. The success of the building is a direct result of the integrative design process that was such an important part of our collaboration with BNIM, the client, and other design team members. We worked closely with BNIM in the building's siting, cladding, massing, and other key design decisions that were connected to our choice of systems. It's also significant that the State of Missouri is now seen as a leader in developing sustainable building.”
